Me 🙂

Biography:

As a recent graduate of Virginia Commonwealth University with a bachelor’s degree in Communication Arts, I have a unique background. While the degree is non-traditional for those with a career goal in the area of government and policy, it has given me strong problem solving skills, team leadership, and the ability to explore my growing interest in law and ethics.

When I started my college career, I like many, was unsure of which career path I wished to take.  With the encouragement of my family and friends I started down a career path in media.  While enjoyable, I found it was not aligning well with my career objectives; coupled with a growing interest in policy and ethics since moving to the Washington DC area I shifted my focus. For economic reasons I decided to finish my current degree.  With the support of the VCU staff I was able to pursue my new interests while still receiving my degree within the normal amount of time.

In an effort to experience foreign cultures and philosophies I studied abroad in Italy and traveled to Paris.  While there I was able to observe architectural and pictorial manifestations with several hundreds years worth of history, and how those depictions changed with the mood and practical needs of the people during those times.  These experiences were especially interesting as many of my weekend trips I took on my own. Allowing me to meet people from many different backgrounds and who had different viewpoint on international events.  Upon returning to VCU, we decided that I should further purse my personal objectives by creating a research paper on copyright law which was to be presented by me to all the students and faculty in the department.  The goal was to education artists on their rights as many were operating on inaccurate information and subsequently opening themselves to lawsuits and/or having their work pirated.  The project was such a success that the school decided to use my materials to teach incoming seniors.

Since graduating I completed an internship in New York City at an education software company called 2tor.  There I learned a great deal on how to research and present information obtained both from internal and external sources.  Also, I maintained some of the company’s blogs, which was fascinating, I was able to pick education-based topics to research and analyze, giving me the time to track and understand current issues in education on both the macro and micro level. Ultimately I enjoyed my time in NYC but recently decided to move back to the area and pursue opportunities in DC.  Since then I have started training to complete my second half-marathon (possibly a full one), and restarted my education into martial arts, in a ju-jitsu class taught by Sensei Bruce Jones. While, not working on those pursuits I volunteer and work a YMCA camp called Deer Valley.  While there I help care for the animals and educate campers about equine care and equitation.  The camp is looking to expand its equestrian facilities and I work with the camp directors and the board to aid in the designs and fund raising efforts.
